Artist Biography

Valena Broussard Dismukes is a Los Angeles based writer and photojournalist with a special interest in portrait, travel, and street photography. Her travels have taken her to countries on six continents. Dismukes' photographs and articles have appeared in numerous publications including World Tennis, Essence, The Other Side, and Mother Earth and her work has been exhibited in over forty-eight solo and group shows. She is most noted for her photographic essay, "Native Americans: The Red-Black Connection," which has traveled to eleven venues across the country. Photographs from this series were used in the award-winning film, "Black Indians: An American Story." Dismukes has published a book based upon those images, The Red-Black Connection. Recently she has begun creating collages and clay sculptures. You can find images of her new ventures in upcoming gallery editions.
